The Wigan Directory was truly a fore-runner for todays Yellow Pages. In the Preface, the author wrote
“In addition to the information usually given in local directories, the reader will find an historical account of Wigan, and brief sketches of neighbouring Villages, which add considerably to the interest of the volume. Altogether, the compiler believes that without making it unnecessarily large, he has succeeded in including every fact of importance to his object, and made 'The Wigan Directory' a valuable work of reference for the whole of the Wigan Union and the village of Golborne. - 27 Montague St, Blackburn. July 1869”
Standish
"Standish is a large parish in the Hundred of Leyland and Northern division of Lancashire, including the townships of Standish-with-Langtree, Shevington and Worthington. The village of Standish is three miles N.N.W from Wigan. There is a church dating from the reign of Elizabeth, erected by Rector Mordie, the first Protestant Rector, who had been a Franciscan friar, and to whom a monument exists in the church. The living, which is a valuable one , is held by the Rev. Canon Brandreth, who resides at the Rectory, near the village. Standish Hall, formerly the seat of the Lords of the Manor - the Standish Family - is now in the occupation of Nathanial Eckersley, Esq., J.P. It is surrounded by a beautiful park and woods. Coal is worked throughout the parish. There is a paper mill, and the Wigan Waterworks are in the parish. There is a grammar school and a national school. There is a station on the Warrington and Preston railway. The population of the township in 1861 was 3,054. The area 3,257 acres. The old Roman road from Wigan northwards, passed through and a few Roman relics have been found here."
Shevington, Crooke, Gathurst and Worthington
Shevington is a township with an area of 1,706 acres, and a population of 1,615. It is mostly agricultural, but coal mines are extensively worked. At Crooke, a hamlet in the township, is a free school. At Gathurst, a mile from Shevington, is a station on the Wigan and Southport Railway. Worthington is mostly an agricultural township, south-east from Coppull station, on the Warrington and Preston line of the L. & N. W. Railway.
