Ashfield House

Ashfield House is an elegant English Country House standing in its own landscaped grounds. Built on land called Ashfield in 1755 by Felix Leach (founder of the Crawford business in Wigan), it was enlarged in 1872 by the then Liberal MP for Wigan, John Lancaster, who had Gladstone as a guest.

It has been the home of a wealthy merchant, a mill owner and a JP, but the house was taken over by Standish UDC as offices for its various departments, and also housed the School Medical and Child Welfare and Dental Clinics.

When Standish became part of Wigan MBC in 1974, it became an annexe of Wigan College of Technology before being left to deteriorate. An extensive period of renovation began in 1991, and it opened as a hotel/restaurant in 1994.
