southern boundary stone

The historic boundary stone shown in the photograph is on the highway from Standish into Wigan, just beyond Boar's Head bridge, and it marks the southern frontier of Standish-with-Langtree. In his book, The History of Standish (1923), the Rev T.C.Porteus observes that the boundary at this point is "the meeting point of 2 dioceses, 2 parishes, 2 hundreds and 2 townships".

This part of our heritage has recently been restored thanks to the instigation of Standish Community Forum with the co-operation of Cllr Gareth Fairhurst (Wigan Central) and Damian Jenkinson (Wigan Borough in Bloom co-ordinator).

Note: A 'hundred' is a geographic division formerly used in England which historically was used to divide a larger region into smaller administrative divisions. It may once have referred to an area likely to provide a hundred men under arms, or containing roughly a hundred homesteads. Standish was in the Leyland Hundred and Wigan in the West Derby Hundred.
