How you can help us to maintain this Wiki

We need help to maintain this Wiki, to keep it as up to date and as accurate as possible. You do not need to be computer literate to help, or even have a computer (though it may help)! How?

Checking our Wiki for accuracy

We need people who can inform us when our information become inaccurate or needs amending. For example if a new business opens or an existing business closes, if an organisation changes its venue or a local event is announced, then we would like to know about it.

Keeping an eye out for Vandalism

Although our registration system stops anonymous editing by anyone, whether well meaning or malicious, there may be times when unwanted edits or articles appear which disfigure our wiki. We want to know about these as soon as possible. Therefore we need people who can keep an eye on our Wiki, looking out for malicious changes. You need not put them right (although this may help), but if you coul let us know about the proiblem we can then deal with it.

Helping to tell Standish about our Wiki

We do not have a marketing budget, and we do not advertise our website within the community as much as we should. We need Standish Wiki evangelists who can spread the word about what we are trying to do, especially amongst local businesses. We have (as of October 2007) only 1/4 to 1/3 of local businesses listed on our website, and we need more! Therefore we need people who can let local businesses and organisations know about our website, and ask them to add their details to the wiki. very

Help maintaining the Wiki

Most of all, it would be great if we had more people capable of editing this wiki. Whether it's correcting a spelling mistake or improving a historical article, whether changing opening hours or adding a new business, we'd like to get help maintaining our Wiki.

Even Me?

You do not need to live in Standish to help us. If you spot something which is obviously wrong, you can either contact us, or maybe try editing it yourself. It's quicker to do a minor edit than it is to open your mail program and describe the problem to us.

I can't edit the wiki, I might press the wrong button and lose all the text!

These wiki pages are based upon a system which allows you to rollback to an earlier version of the text. Therefore it is easy to remove a malicious change, or to reinstate some accidentally deleted text. Some pages are protected top prevent them being changed, but most pages allow you to play with the content without worrying that you could, with one keyboard slip, destroy the lot.

Our pages also allow you to preview your changes before you make them live. Also, if you're really unsure whether your changes are correct, why not try them in our Project:Sandbox first. This is a page which you can edit with whatever you want, a sort of wiki playground. We will, on occasion, delete all the content, but if you want to have a first go at editing our wiki, this is a great place to start.
