About
St. Marie's Church was opened on 18th May 1884. It was opened by the Right Rev. the Bishop of Liverpool, Dr. O'Reilly. On that day there were two services, one at 10:30am, the other in the evening and admission was by card only. It was reported in the Wigan Observer at the time that... "The new church was a decided ornament to the neighbourhood as it has an exceedingly devotional and comfortable appearance and it is altogether one of the most perfect country churches we have ever seen... ...After the service girls clothed in white and boys with handsome sashes walked in procession round the church with Bishop and Clergy following... ...The beauty of the scene was enhanced by a glorious May sun."
