About

  • Mission Statement: To establish a centre of excellence in which individuals are encouraged to develop their maximum potential.

During the past six years Standish Community High School has been fortunate to be involved in a major building and re-modelling programme, the product of which is the Langtree Building and a number of high refurbished quality classroom suites.

It began with the provision of temporary classroom space - Science Labs, specialist Art and Technology rooms, a supplementary Dining Room, a second Drama Studio and several classroom spaces. Some have been retained whilst the final phase of the building programme is about to be embarked upon.

The Langtree Building opened for use in September 1992 and provides the finest Science, Technology, Visual Arts, Information Technology, T.V. Studio and Library/Resource Centre facilities. In addition it contains a new Administrative Suite and Conference Centre.

Its furnishings and fittings have been selected to provide comfort and adaptability in a way rarely found in schools. Each teaching space is equipped to the highest specification to help the pupils enjoy the demands of the National Curriculum and provide the greatest opportunities for all to fulfil their potential.

We are able to ensure that pupils work in an environment which is safe, attractive and conducive to learning. The new Library/Resource Centre with its high technology equipment, cable T.V. and Ercol furniture encourages more flexible learning situations giving pupils a greater capacity for research within a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

The refurbishment of the old Science, Technology, English and Maths facilities provides classroom space for Humanities, English, Modern Languages and Mathematics. The staff accommodation relocated in the 'old Library' was completed in November 1993.

Many people have contributed to the success of the building and refurbishment programme so far, especially our support staff, without whose co-operation and goodwill the Langtree Building could not have been opened on time.

In 1999/2000 a new building programme will take place which will enlarge the dining room, create an additional science laboratory (ten in total) and refurbish three mobile classrooms.

Language College

As you are aware from press and radio coverage, Standish Community High School has been chosen as one of only a handful of schools in the country and the first in the North West to be designated a Language College. This follows our recognition as the first school in the United Kingdom to be awarded the prestigious Investor In People status in January 1993.

The main purpose of the Language College initiative is to strengthen the whole curriculum of the school which will lead to higher achievement of young people of all abilities. It will also provide specialist facilities and services to meet the foreign language needs of individuals and organisations in school, the local community and the wider community of North West England.

The three year project, which will cost between £700,000 and £800,000, will complement the £5M Science, Technology and Information Handling building and the recently refurbished 21 classrooms for English, Maths and Humanities. Today Standish Community High School possesses some of the finest learning facilities and environment in the North West. We believe that Language College will add to our particular strengths in the teaching of Technology, Science, English and Mathematics.

The successful submission the school made to the Department for Education and Employment focuses on strong links between contributory primary schools, Winstanley College, Wigan & Leigh College and the Universities of Lancaster, Reading and Leicester. This partnership, together with our sponsors, will provide a strategic response to new national and local developments and rigorously monitor targets. We are indebted to our sponsors who have offered over £250,000 in cash and goods. They are: Amtico Ltd, CCArt Ltd, Ellis Williams Architects, Express Electrical Distributors, Gemini Print Ltd, H.J. Heinz Co. Ltd, J.J.B. Sports Plc, Langtree Training & Conference Centre Limited, Manchester Airport Plc, Mesnes Managing Agency Limited, Midland Bank Plc., (HSBC Group), Milliken Industrials Limited, Wm Morrisons Supermarkets, Northern Counties Ltd, PTFA, Vektor Ltd and Wrightington Hotel. Without their financial support, enthusiasm and commitment this project would not have been possible.

In a press conference, The Secretary of State for Education and Employment, said, "Standish Community High School in Wigan will create a purpose-built Languages and European Curriculum Centre, providing 'real life' settings for language learning. In an international world, we need people with excellent linguistic and communication skills. Employers are increasingly looking for young people to have language skills alongside professional trade qualifications. Language Colleges will help to meet these needs. We now have the first sixteen Language Colleges. They will provide the lead for many more to follow".

In September 1999, the school was informed that it has been successful in a further bid for funding from September 1999 to August 2002.
