Editing our wiki is easy... press Edit on a page (if you're registered), and off you go....

Starting a new page is a little harder, but not too hard. It depends what sort of page you want to edit. History pages are fairly easy, Community and Commercial pages a little harder.

Starting a Commercial/Community page

1. Does the page already exist?

Duplicate entries will just confuse our visitors, so it's important to confirm that the page does not currently exist. Use the search facility to check not just that the page name you are looking for does not exist, but also that it does not exist under another name.

2. Start the page with a search

To start a new page, first search for the page name you want. This will give you the opportunity to create this page. Press this link and you will be presented with a blank page.

3. Entering Information

Now we can start entering information. First we start with an Infobox template. This is the box in the top right featuring important information about the organisation. We add it here so visitors know exactly where to find it.

Templates are basically predefined ways to display information. We have two types of template box, basically dependent upon what type of page this is:

Commercial Pages

On a commercial page we will be adding information to an Infobox entitled Infobox Business. This contains information such as the address and contact details of the firm. It always starts with the name of the firm, and then contains further optional information. A typical business Infobox looks like this:

{{Infobox_Business
}}

This will enter an infobox which just shows the business name. More information can be added by adding further fields.

Note: there are only a limited number of field you can choose from: address, tel, fax, email, website and contact.

Contact
Steve Bradburn
Address
123 High Street, Standish, WN6 0AA
Telephone
01257 425293
Fax
01257 425293
Website
www.standish.org.uk
Email
steve @
standish.org.uk

For example:

{{Infobox_Business
| address = 123 High Street, Standish, WN6 0AA
| telephone = 01257 425293
| fax = 01257 425293
| email = steve@standish.org.uk
| website = www.standish.org.uk
| contact = Steve Bradburn
}}

Notes:

  • Please use the address field in the following form: building (if necessary), street, Standish, postcode - (a Wigan line is not necessary here).
  • Please include the code (01257 or 01942 or other) in the telephone number, so we can discriminate between local, national and mobile numbers.
  • Contact is only used if there is a definite person to contact - usually this field will be unnecessary.
  • Items may be entered in any order, but will always appear, where set, in the order shown above right (Contact to Email).

If the business has specific opening hours (if it is not a 24/7 home or internet business), then you can extend the template using the Infobox Business Hours template. This adds extra fields to the template shown above:

{{Infobox_Business

| mon_am = 9:00am - 11:00pm
| mon_pm = 1:00pm - 5:00pm
| tue_am = 9:00am - 5:00pm
| wed_am = 9:00am - 1:00pm
| thu_am = 2:00pm - 5:00pm
| fri_am = 11:00pm - 12:00noon
| fri_pm = 2:00pm - 12.00midnight
| sat_am = 10:00am - 10:30pm
| sun_am = Closed
}}

Notes:

  • Other Infobox Business fields (address, tel, website etc.) have been removed in this example, but can be used here.
  • If there are two opening times in a day (such as either side of a lunchbreak) then using the _am and _pm fields will show both sets of times.
  • If there is a single opening time (eg. with no lunchbreak) then just use the _am setting, which will automatically just display a single timespan.
  • _am and _pm are not restricted to just AM and PM times; for example a pub may have an afternoon break. These are just ways to enter two separate times.
  • Times should be displayed in 12-hour format, with a colon, followed by 2 digits for minutes and lower case AM or PM: 10:30am or 6:00pm.
  • To avoid confusion, noon is shown as 12:00noon, midnight as 12:midnight
  • A day closed should be entered as "Closed".

Following the infobox, a normal commercial entry will display the logo. This uses another template, entitled Template:Logo, which allows us to use a coloured background around the logo image. The syntax for this is:

[[Logo|Megacorp.jpg|The Megacorp Standish Office Logo|red]]
