The battle of Wigan Lane, 1651, took place on the road between Wigan and Standish. Sir Thomas Tyldesley, to whom the monument on the battlefield is erected, was a son-in-law of Ralph Standish; and the officer who placed it there was a parishioner, one of the Rigbys of Burgh in Duxbury.[1]
